Buildertrend Alternatives for Small Contractors (2026)
On this page
Buildertrend is the name most contractors hear first. It's also quote-only, sold through a sales call, and pitched by Buildertrend itself at builders running 5+ projects a year. If you're a small remodeler or GC, here's what Buildertrend likely costs, what it does well, and six alternatives that fit a smaller shop, with published prices wherever they exist.
Short answer: for a 1–15 person remodeling crew, the alternatives with public, lower prices are Amberchalk ($79/mo, unlimited users, works offline), Contractor Foreman (from $49/mo billed yearly), JobTread ($199/mo + $20 per internal user) and Projul (from $199/mo billed yearly). Buildertrend still makes sense if you want the most mature all-in-one with a sub portal, selections, warranties and accounting sync, and you're comfortable with a custom quote.
All prices checked on vendor sites on October 17, 2026. Amberchalk publishes this blog. We include where each tool, ours included, falls short.
How much does Buildertrend cost?
Buildertrend no longer publishes prices. Its pricing page asks a few questions about your business and books a call for a custom quote. It does say every subscription includes unlimited users, its core tools, daily virtual trainings and a 24/7 help center.
For a budget anchor, here's what's public:
- Last published plans (December 2024): Essential $499/mo, Advanced $799/mo and Complete $1,099/mo month-to-month, or $449, $719 and $989 billed yearly. These come from an archived copy of the pricing page cited by Projul's comparison, so treat them as history, not a quote.
- Since early 2025 Buildertrend reportedly quotes on your annual construction volume, with third-party guides putting typical yearly spend for a full-featured license around $8,000–$10,000 (Contractor Software Hub).
- Buildertrend's own page says it was "built for builders who oversee 5+ projects a year or handle complex, multi-phase builds" and "want to go from 6–8 figures in annual revenue."
The honest takeaway: you won't know your Buildertrend price until you talk to sales, and the public numbers suggest it's several hundred dollars a month at minimum.
What Buildertrend does well
- Depth. Scheduling, daily logs, time clock, change orders, selections, sub portal, warranties, bids, POs, budgets, estimates, invoices and takeoff are all listed on its pricing page.
- Integrations. QuickBooks, Xero and Gusto.
- Unlimited users on every subscription, so adding a superintendent doesn't add a fee.
- Client portal. One r/Contractor user who ran custom homes on it called the client portal and daily logs "genuinely its strongest part" (thread, Sept 2026).
- Training. Live virtual trainings, a learning academy and paid onsite consulting.
Why small contractors look elsewhere
- The price is hidden and sized for bigger builders. If you do a handful of kitchens and baths a year, you're paying for warranty management and bid packages you may never open.
- Complexity. A common complaint on Reddit is that it has far more functionality than a small shop will use. One long-time design-build user called it "overpriced and clunky" in the same thread above.
- Annual commitments. Contractors in that thread suggest asking sales for month-to-month or a pilot because the default is an annual contract.
- CoConstruct users are being moved. Buildertrend bought CoConstruct in 2021, and CoConstruct's migration page says projects can be added only through March 31, 2027. If you're on CoConstruct, Buildertrend is the default landing spot, but you're free to pick something else.
6 Buildertrend alternatives for small contractors
1. Amberchalk: flat price, phone-first, works offline
Price: Free plan (1 user, 1 active project). Crew $39/mo (3 users, 3 projects). Pro $79/mo with unlimited users and unlimited projects ($790/yr). 7-day trial, no contract, cancel from the billing portal (pricing).
Built for: remodelers and small GCs who run the job from a phone. Generate a schedule from a template, send change orders your client approves from a link with a typed signature, log photos and daily notes, track selections and deliveries, run time cards, send T&M invoices with markup and let clients pay online by card or bank through Stripe. Homeowners get a link to their own project with progress and photos but no money data. Pro adds financials with job costing, receipt scanning and takeoff from plans. Data lives on the device first, so it keeps working with no signal and syncs later.
Falls short on: no sub/vendor portal, no warranty module, and QuickBooks is a file export (QuickBooks Online CSV, Desktop IIF), not a live sync. It's a new product without third-party reviews yet. It's a web app you install to your home screen, not an App Store download.
2. JobTread: closest feature match at a public price
Price: $199/mo including one internal user, +$20/mo per added internal user (users 2–10); 20% off yearly; no free trial, 30-day money-back on monthly (pricing page). Five internal users is $279/mo.
Strengths: two-way QuickBooks Online sync, free customer/sub/vendor portals, strong job costing and top-rated support. In the r/Contractor thread above, users describe switching from Buildertrend to JobTread, one calling it "half the price for our team size."
Trade-offs: crew who track time are paid users, there's no trial, and reviewers mention a learning curve. Full breakdown in our JobTread alternatives guide.
3. Contractor Foreman: lowest entry price
Price: billed yearly, $49/mo (1 user), $105 (3 users), $166 (8 users), $221 (15), $332 (unlimited); monthly from $139 for 3 users; 30-day free trial (pricing page).
Strengths: a huge feature list for the money, native iOS/Android apps, QuickBooks Online and Zapier.
Trade-offs: the headline prices need a yearly plan; lots of modules to learn.
4. Projul: flat plans, strong time tracking
Price: billed yearly, Starter $199/mo (3 users), Core $399 (10), Core+ $599 (20, adds job costing, client portal and QuickBooks Online), Pro $1,199 (unlimited) (pricing page).
Strengths: geofenced time tracking and a full mobile app. Trade-offs: the closest Buildertrend-style package (Core+) is $599/mo.
5. Buildxact: estimating first
Price: free Go plan for AI estimates and proposals; Foundation $199/mo with unlimited users and takeoffs; Pro $399/mo adds schedules and job management; 15% off yearly (pricing page).
Best if estimating and takeoff are where you lose the most time.
6. A spreadsheet and a shared photo album
Not a joke. If you run one or two jobs at a time, a schedule template, a printed change order form and a shared album can be enough. Move to software when you're losing change-order money or chasing crew hours on Friday nights.

Questions to answer before you pick
- How many people need to log in or clock in? Per-user pricing vs. flat pricing is the biggest cost swing.
- Does your bookkeeper need live accounting sync? If yes, shortlist JobTread, Contractor Foreman, Projul Core+ or Buildertrend.
- Do subs need their own logins? Buildertrend and JobTread have sub portals; Amberchalk doesn't.
- Where's your worst signal? Test each app in airplane mode on a real jobsite.
- Who will set it up? If nobody has a free week, pick the tool you can run on one job by tomorrow.
Moving off Buildertrend or CoConstruct without losing a job
Whatever you pick, the switch is where crews get hurt, not the software. A plan that works for small shops:
- Export first. Pull client contacts, your cost items, and PDFs of signed contracts, change orders and invoices for every open job before your renewal date.
- Don't migrate finished jobs. Archive closed projects as PDFs and rebuild only the jobs that are still running.
- Overlap for a few weeks. Finish active jobs in the old system and start every new job in the new one. Pick a cut-over date and tell your bookkeeper so nothing posts twice.
- Train on one real job. Have your lead carpenter clock in, add photos and log a change order on day one. If that takes more than ten minutes to learn, keep shopping.
- Check the contract. Look for the renewal date and the notice period so you're not billed for another year by accident.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Buildertrend cost per month?
Buildertrend doesn't publish prices; its pricing page books a call for a custom quote. Its last published plans (December 2024) were $499, $799 and $1,099 per month month-to-month. Third-party guides put typical full-featured spend around $8,000–$10,000 a year. Get a written quote before you compare.
Does Buildertrend charge per user?
No. Buildertrend's pricing page says every subscription includes unlimited users.
Is there a free alternative to Buildertrend?
Amberchalk has a Free plan (1 user, 1 active project) that includes schedules, photos, change orders and owner updates. Buildxact has a free Go plan focused on estimates and proposals. Paid tools like Contractor Foreman offer 30-day trials.
What is happening to CoConstruct?
Buildertrend acquired CoConstruct in 2021 and is moving customers to Buildertrend. CoConstruct's migration page says projects can be added only through March 31, 2027, and historical project data stays viewable.
Is Buildertrend worth it for a small remodeler?
It can be if you run several jobs at once and will use its sub portal, selections, warranties and accounting integrations. Buildertrend describes its fit as builders running 5+ projects a year. Smaller crews often get more value from a tool with a public, lower price.
Is Amberchalk a full Buildertrend replacement?
For many small remodelers' daily work (schedules, change orders, photos, time cards, invoices and a homeowner link) yes. It doesn't have a sub/vendor portal, warranty module or live QuickBooks sync, so larger builders who depend on those should keep them on their list.
