A remodel schedule is mostly about order and waiting: who follows whom, when the inspector comes, and what must be ordered before demo. Here's a free printable remodeling schedule template, kitchen, bath and whole-home phases with typical durations, the lead times behind most delays, and how to turn it into a live schedule on your phone.

Quick answer

For a small remodeler, we recommend Amberchalk: Generate schedule lays out a kitchen, bath or whole-home job from a start date, assigns subs to each step and dates your deliveries. It works on the Free plan; Pro is $79/mo for unlimited users. JobTread or Contractor Foreman fit better if you also want their wider estimating and accounting tools.

Amberchalk publishes this blog. Durations are typical planning ranges, not guarantees. Competitor prices checked October 27, 2026 on each vendor's pricing page.

What a remodeling schedule template should include

  • Phases in build order, so nobody tiles before the rough inspection passes.
  • A trade or sub on each step.
  • Working days, plus days off (weekends, holidays, weather).
  • Planned and actual dates; the gap teaches you to estimate.
  • Waiting time: inspection booking and shop lead times, when nobody is on site but the clock runs.
  • An order-by list for long-lead items.

Remodel phases in order

Job size changes how long each phase takes, not the order:

  1. Pre-construction: contract, final selections, permit, long-lead orders.
  2. Protection and demo, with a little time for surprises behind the walls.
  3. Framing changes and blocking.
  4. Rough-ins: plumbing, electrical, HVAC, often overlapping.
  5. Rough inspection: nothing gets covered until it passes.
  6. Insulation and drywall (waterproofing in wet areas).
  7. Finishes: flooring, cabinets, countertops, tile.
  8. Trim-out: fixtures, lighting, appliances, glass, paint.
  9. Final inspection, punch list and walkthrough.

Kitchen remodel schedule

For a mid-size kitchen with the layout mostly unchanged, on-site work commonly runs about 5–8 weeks once the permit is issued and cabinets are on hand. Layout changes add weeks.

StepTypical working days
Protection & demo1–3
Framing changes (if any)1–3
Rough plumbing, electrical, hood duct2–4
Rough inspection1–2 plus booking time
Insulation & drywall3–5
Prime, flooring2–5
Cabinet install2–4
Countertops: template, fabrication, install1 + 5–15 shop days + 1
Backsplash1–3
Plumbing & electrical trim, appliances1–3
Final paint, final inspection, punch list3–5

The step people underestimate is countertops: templating happens after cabinets are set, then the shop needs time. Amberchalk's kitchen template plans 8 working days of fabrication. Backsplash and sink hookups wait on the tops.

Bathroom remodel schedule

Gutting a standard hall bath commonly takes about 3–5 weeks on site. Waterproofing must cure and pass a flood test (or inspection, where required) before tile.

StepTypical working days
Protection & demo1–3
Rough plumbing & electrical/fan1–3
Rough inspection1–2 plus booking time
Cement board & drywall2–4
Waterproofing, shower pan, flood test2–3
Tile, grout & seal3–6
Vanity, paint, trim-out2–3
Shower glass: measure, fabricate, install1 + 5–15 shop days + 1
Final inspection & punch1–3

Measure shower glass after tile, and do the vanity, paint and trim-out during the shop wait.

Whole-home remodel schedule

A whole-home interior remodel commonly runs 3–6 months or more, and pre-construction alone can take weeks.

PhaseTypical duration
Pre-construction & permits2–8 weeks
Demo1–2 weeks
Framing1–3 weeks
Rough MEP (plumbing, electrical, HVAC) + inspections2–4 weeks
Insulation & drywall2–4 weeks
Cabinets, trim & doors1–3 weeks
Flooring, tile & countertops2–4 weeks
Paint & finish MEP2–3 weeks
Punch list, final inspection & walkthrough1–2 weeks

With several trades working at once, paper gets hard to keep current.

Lead times to order before demo

Most delays aren't the crew; they're an order placed too late. Typical ranges (get a written date from your supplier):

  • Custom or semi-custom cabinets: about 4–12 weeks. Stock cabinets can be days.
  • Windows and exterior doors: about 4–12 weeks.
  • Special-order tile or stone: about 2–6 weeks.
  • Appliances: in stock to several months.
  • Countertops and shower glass: about 1–3 weeks after templating or measuring.

Order-by date = needed-on-site date minus lead time minus a week of buffer.

Where inspections fall

Your building department decides, but most permitted remodels have a rough inspection before walls close, sometimes an insulation inspection, and a final. Give each its own step with booking time in front; an inspection that's "next week" can idle your drywall crew for days.

Tips to keep a remodel schedule on track

  • Lock selections before demo.
  • Confirm subs a week out, then the day before.
  • Re-date the whole chain when one step slips. Tell the client the same day.
  • Write delays down. Weather days and late deliveries go on page 2, and on a change order when they change the contract time.
  • Florida remodelers: in hurricane season (June through November), add weather days for exterior work and window deliveries.

Ways to keep the schedule: printable, spreadsheet or app

1. Amberchalk: our pick for small remodelers (Generate schedule, phone-first, offline)

Price: Free plan (1 user, 1 active project, no card). Crew $39/mo or $390/yr (3 users, 3 active projects, +$10/mo per extra user or project). Pro $79/mo or $790/yr with unlimited users and unlimited projects. 7-day trial on paid plans, no contract (pricing).

How the schedule works: open a job's Schedule tab and tap Generate schedule.

  • Templates by job type: kitchen, bathroom, basement, deck, flooring, roof, whole-home and custom, with inspections and shop lead times built in.
  • Your calendar: start date, weekends on or off, days off. Change any step's days or untick it, and see the total span before saving.
  • Fit to target completion scales the steps to the job's target date.
  • Subs per step: pick the sub for each trade; whole-home jobs run phase by phase from demo to final walkthrough.
  • Deliveries: fills in "needed by" dates for selections and appliances.
  • Changes: edit any task; Regenerate keeps your edits and moves later steps to follow.
  • Homeowner link: shared tasks appear as schedule highlights (names and dates) next to progress photos, with no money data.

Beyond the schedule: change orders and selections clients approve from a link with an e-signature, crew time cards, T&M invoices and Pay online through your own Stripe account. It's phone-first and works offline, syncing when you're back in signal. Pro adds financials with job costing, receipt scanning, estimating and takeoff.

Good to know: there's no sub or vendor portal, so you send subs their dates yourself. Generated durations are starting points. Online payments carry a 1% Amberchalk fee (max $25) plus Stripe's fee. It's a new product without third-party reviews yet, and it's a web app you add to your home screen, not an App Store download.
